Which one is real? Calgary police release warning on air gun safety

Calgary police are alerting residents about the dangers of airsoft, pellet and BB guns, which are widely available and often designed to look like real firearms.

In a social media post on Tuesday, officials posted an image of two black guns – one real and the other an air gun.

The photo was supposed to test Calgarians’ knowledge about the firearms and teach a lesson about safety.

“Their realistic appearance makes these weapons nearly impossible for bystanders, witnesses and police officers to distinguish air guns from real firearms, especially in highly dynamic and evolving incidents,” the Calgary Police Service (CPS) said on its website.

“Incidents involving air guns can escalate quickly and will result in a serious emergency response from police officers, who must treat every potential threat to public safety as real.”

CPS said that nearly half of all air gun incidents in the city so far in 2025 involved youth and everyone needs to know that “these aren’t toys.”

“What might seem like a prank or harmless fun can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation – potentially resulting in criminal charges,” CPS said.

“Parents and guardians play a critical role in helping youth understand the legal and safety implications of using air guns in public spaces.”

Authorities say it’s illegal to fire an air gun within Calgary city limits outside of safe, controlled environments.

Air guns should not be carried or displayed in public either.

Anyone who uses an air gun to threaten, intimidate or harm someone could face criminal charges.

CPS says everyone has a role to play in keeping communities safe.

“Store air guns securely and out of reach of children. Educate youth on the legal risks and safety concerns related to the use of air guns.”
