Twenty-three local design projects were honoured at the Edmonton Urban Design Awards ceremony on Thursday. The gala event presented awards in eight categories selected by an international jury, in addition to a People’s Choice category chosen by Edmonton voters. Winners include commercial and residential buildings, as well as open space areas, street design and heritage projects. Whyte Avenue’s recently opened Station Park building shares the Urban Architecture Award of Excellence with the soon-to-open Roundhouse Park at the Station Lands Downtown. “The Edmonton Urban Design Awards showcase the best of Edmonton’s design community,” says Mayor Andrew Knack in a press release. “These awards highlight not only their talents, but their understanding of how to make architecture and public spaces inviting for Edmontonians.” Fifty-one projects were submitted to the 20th Edmonton Urban Design Awards, with the jury having the option of choosing multiple winners in a category. The Polykar building near Nisku won the People’s Choice Award, and three student projects received awards recognition.
