The city is closing the westbound turnoff from Yellowhead Trail onto 121 Street to catch up on construction progress lost to bad weather. The turnoff will be closed Sept. 1 to the end of November. “The closure will allow crews to complete work more efficiently and help keep the overall (Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion) project on schedule following significant rainfall earlier this summer,” the city said in a statement on Friday. “The temporary closure is expected to reduce the overall duration of construction impacts.” To support traffic headed to NAIT and businesses in the Kingsway area, the city is opening a temporary westbound-to-southbound left turn at 107 Street. However, the city expects traffic on all nearby routes to increase. Commuters are advised to give themselves extra time. Yellowhead Trail will continue to host two lanes of traffic in each direction. As well, the right-turn from eastbound Yellowhead Trail to 121 Street will be remaining open to maintain access to Via Rail. When a finished freeway, Yellowhead Trail will host three lanes of free-flowing traffic in each direction.
