An Edmonton family doctor has been suspended after admitting to three counts of unprofessional conduct. According to a media release from College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), Dr. Tarek Bensasi allowed clinical aid at his clinic between 2018 and 2022 to provide care to patients who believed he was a licensed physician. The clinical aid was an international medical graduate at the time, but was not a regulated member of CPSA, the regulatory body said. “But Dr. Bensasi mistakenly believed they were permitted to provide certain medical services without supervision when this was not the case,” the CPSA added. A tribunal found Dr. Bensasi also improperly submitted insurance claims for services provided by the clinical aid, and created incorrect patient records saying he had seen and treated the patients himself. Dr. Bensasi admitted to the charges. His practice was suspended for six months, with two months suspended pending completion of other sanctions. The CPSA said he will also have to complete a program on ethics and will have to repay $10,000 relating to the investigation.
