The City of Edmonton is beating the heat with Splash Day on Saturday to signal the beginning of reopening outdoor pools for the summer, just in time for Victoria Day long weekend. • Sign up for breaking news emails from CTV News Edmonton, right at your fingertips The Wîhkwêntôwin Outdoor Pool located at 10315 119 St., formerly named the Oliver Outdoor Pool, will be open to guests on Saturday so long as weather and air quality in the city permits. The Fred Broadstock and the Queen Elizabeth pools are scheduled to reopen June 7 while the Borden Natural and Mill Creek outdoor pools will be available to patrons beginning June 21. The city recommends reserving a time slot to avoid lines during public swims, but added that it is not required. Drop-in access is dependent on the pool’s capacity versus the number of timed- entries booked. To kick off pool season, Splash Day will be held at the City Hall Plaza from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Guests can enjoy free, family-friendly activities and entertainment, including a live DJ, a hula hoop circus, giveaways, food, dancing and games. The fun doesn’t stop as Movies on the Square will end the day with a screening of Free Willy from 3 to 5 p.m at Churchill Square. The city says operating hours at outdoor pools and other events are subject to change, or even close due to poor air quality or if extreme weather events should occur, such as heavy rain or lightning.
