Amid rising food insecurity across the province, Food Banks Alberta is partnering with the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation for the “Feeding Oil Country” 50/50 raffle. In a provided statement to CTV News, Executive Director of Food Banks Alberta Shawna Bissell says the way to address food insecurity is “by bringing together members, stakeholders and community partners to share food, funding, resources and best practices.” Edmonton’s Food Bank will be one of the 50/50 recipients, providing food to families and children in need through its hamper programs and partnerships. “We are excited to be selected as the Edmonton Oilers 50/50 beneficiary,” says Edmonton Food Bank CEO Tamisan Bencz-Knight in a provided statement. “This contribution strengthens our ability to purchase core food items including eggs, milk, pasta and other staples which ensure individuals and families have access to nutritious, reliable meals. As demand for our services continues to climb, this support will play a critical role in shaping our capacity and preparedness heading into the new year.” Another 50/50 recipient is Second Harvest, which works with food businesses to redirect surplus food to non-profits and community organizations. “We’re grateful to the Edmonton Oilers Foundation and every Oilers fan who stands with us in tackling food waste and hunger,” says Second Harvest CEO Lori Nikkel in a provided statement. “Communities in Alberta rely on rescued food every day, and support for the 50/50 ensures we can deliver even more - keeping healthy food out of landfills and redirecting it to the people who need it most.” In addition to the 50/50 jackpot, the Feeding Oil Country raffle features additional prizes including Oilers game tickets and signed, game-used memorabilia.
