Two Manitoba golfers got an unexpected surprise while golfing in Pinawa on Friday. Tim MacGregor and Brendan Currie were golfing at Pinawa Golf and Country Club for Currie’s birthday when they encountered a black bear on the fifth hole by their carts. “We got up to the green, and there was a female black bear sitting on the back of the green and just sort of playing with one of the balls back there,” MacGregor said. “So we decided, ‘Well, let’s putt and let’s get out of here.’” The pair started to putt and the bear moved towards the carts and started chewing the back seat. “We tried everything to scare it off,” MacGregor said. “Finally, my son Cole got the flag and started making noises with it, and we threw stones at it, and finally Yogi took off.” “It seemed totally unbothered by whatever (the group) was trying to do to it,” Currie said. It wasn’t the first time the group had seen a bear on the course that week. On Tuesday, a bear came up to their cart and ripped open a bag with a muffin in it. Currie and MacGregor have seen bears on the course in previous years, typically when berries are out on the trees. “There’s never a dull moment at Pinawa Golf and Country Club,” MacGregor said. The duo said the bear sightings will not deter them from golfing there again.
