Shoppers across different grocery stores in Spruce Grove and Stony Plain were able to drop off food donations to help people facing food insecurity. The campaign was in support of Tri-Region Hunger Day, a local effort for World Hunger Day, which aims to raise $60,000 and collect 20,000 pounds of non-perishable food. Sheri Ratsoy, executive director of Parkland Food Bank, says they plan to feed 3,000 families this summer. “Summer time is not when people are thinking of donating, they’re thinking of summer holidays and going camping and having fun, but the need is just as great,” Ratsoy told CTV News Edmonton. She says core ingredients for healthy meals instead of highly processed foods are key items they’re looking for. “It gives our families a lot more versatility and a lot more nutrition for what they’re getting,” Ratsoy said. The first $10,000 donated online will be matched by an anonymous donor.
