Residents of the Edgemont neighbourhood in west Edmonton are asking for increased traffic safety measures after a 65-year-old woman was killed while crossing the road with her grandson on Saturday. Nick Arrand has lived in Edgemont for six years and has complained about that intersection to the city several times. “Myself and a lot of neighbours submit requests to the city, and 311, expressing our concerns about the speed on this road,” Arrand told CTV News Edmonton. “I said it’s going to come to a death at some point … and sadly, it’s happened. Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said the woman was hit by a Ford F-350 driven by a 38-year-old man who was attempting to turn left onto Edgemont Way at Edgemont Boulevard. Emergency crews brought the woman to hospital where she later died of her injuries. Const. Trevor Henderson said he’ll pull over 10 cars an hour on average for various traffic infractions during his weekly patrols in the area. Speed, heavy trucks off truck routes and stop sign violations are common in the area, he said. “It’s endless. I just can’t keep up,” said the constable. Sipiwiyiniwak Coun. Sarah Hamilton said she’s asked the city’s Safe Mobility team to re-evaluate the intersection for safety measures to enhance pedestrian safety. “I encourage residents to continue reporting road safety concerns – whether through 311 or directly to our office,” said a statement from Hamilton. Jessica Lamarre, director of Safe Mobility, said the intersection where the death occurred received enhanced pavement markings for safety and visibility in 2024. “Once EPS has completed their collision report, the city’s engineers will use it to complete a thorough safety review of the location in light of the specifics of this incident,” said Lamarre in a statement. “These reviews identify any short and long term improvement that should be made not only at this location, but at others like it throughout the city.” Until then, Henderson says to come to a complete stop when approaching a stop sign and to obey speed limit signs. “The speed limit is 40. If it’s not posted, it’s still 40.”
