Dozens of Telus volunteers got their hands dirty to take part in a variety of hands-on projects in support of Edmonton seniors. The event was in collaboration with Operation Friendship Seniors Society (OFSS), a non-profit organization that supports seniors across the inner city. The group provides housing and programs for seniors experiencing homelessness, social isolation and more. “We’re doing a lot of work today, just getting this place looking good for the summer months. A safe gathering place for them to brighten up their home,” said Jimmy Morrison with OFSS. Throughout the day, volunteers helped paint gazebos, benches and railings, planted flowers, did yard work and spent time with the seniors. “It shows them that someone cares about them … sometimes our seniors can’t get out to do these things because of restrictions with their health issues,” said Morrison. Volunteers were helping at Pioneer Place and Lions Manor. The day is part of Telus Day of Giving, a global day where more than 100,000 volunteers across 35 countries are giving back to communities. It’s the 21st year for the campaign. “You can tell with the smiles on their faces this morning. Our seniors are coming down and are saying thank you to the volunteers – that’s what today is all about,” said Morrison.
