One last beautiful day before the rain returns. Temperatures will hit the mid-20s this afternoon. Sunshine this morning will give way to increasing cloud through the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms will develop in western Alberta midday and this afternoon. The showers and thunderstorms will move east toward the Edmonton region late this afternoon and early this evening. Steadier rain starts overnight tonight and continues through much of Saturday in central and north-central Alberta. The latest model guidance suggests about 20-40 mm of rain for the Edmonton area by Saturday night. Temperatures will top out in the 17 C range with gusts around 50 km/h in the city. More rain for Sunday, although we’re expecting less total rainfall than Saturday (somewhere in the 10-15 mm range looks likely). Expect precipitation in the area throughout both days... ALTHOUGH... there’s a chance we get some breaks in the rain Saturday afternoon and again Sunday afternoon. We’re currently sitting at 203 mm of rain this June. The record rainfall total for June is 217 mm set in 1914. I’ll be shocked if we don’t break that record by the end of the weekend. In fact, this June will probably end up as the second-wettest month PERIOD...(of any month, not just June). I’ll have more on that in a separate article this afternoon. Outside the Edmonton region, higher rainfall totals are expected to the east and northwest of the city with some spots potentially getting 80+ mm. For most areas, this won’t be as much rain as last weekend. However, with the ground saturated or nearly saturated in many areas, flooding is a big concern again this weekend. The weather statement related to that risk remains in effect for areas from Lloydminster west to Edson and from Athabasca/Lac La Biche south to Ponoka/Wainwright. We may see that upgraded to a warning for some of those regions later today. Beyond the weekend, there’s not much “HEAT” as the pattern remains unsettled through next week. Daytime highs will get to the low 20s and there’s a risk of a late-day shower or thunderstorm almost every day. But...the heaviest and steadiest rain will be done by late Sunday.
