Edmonton police have charged an 18-year-old man with several weapons offences following an early morning shooting near Whyte Avenue two weeks ago. The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said around 3 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 officers responded to reports of shots being fired outside a restaurant in the area of Gateway Boulevard and 85 Avenue. Police said they heard a group of people were fighting before a man pulled out a gun and started firing. Four people, three men and one woman, were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. More than 16 hours later, police tracked down and arrested a suspect outside a home in the area of Winterburn Road and Yellowhead Trail. Officers also found the gun believed to have been used in the shooting. “We were able to quickly remove this firearm off the streets and are thankful that the individuals who were harmed by the accused have been released from medical care,” said Det. James Robbins with EPS Investigations Branch in a news release. Phoenix Papin is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, pointing a firearm, assault with a weapon and aggravated assault. EPS said he is in custody and his next court date is Nov. 26.
