An orange-level rainfall warning is in effect for the city of Edmonton as well as areas from Edson east to Vermilion and Athabasca south to Rimbey/Camrose/Wainwright. In general, 50-90 millimetres is likely by late Sunday. Some areas will see a bit less and there may be some localized pockets of slightly more. Given how saturated the soil is, overland flooding is a risk for the second straight weekend. The Edmonton area is expecting roughly 50 to 80 mm. Here’s an estimate of how much rain could fall by Sunday evening across the rest of the warning area. Edmonton will very likely set a new record for the most rain in June. The current record is 217 mm back in June 1914. As of June 26, Edmonton has had 203 mm of rain. Records at the Edmonton airport only go back to the mid 1900s and so we’ve already had the wettest June on record at YEG. Not only will this likely become the rainiest June on record, there’s a chance Edmonton could get close to the record for wettest month. The current record-holder is July 1901 with 283 mm of rain. Edmonton should get at least to second spot on that list following this weekend’s deluge.
