Edmonton police have arrested a youth in connection with the suspicious death of a 16-year-old girl. Jazmin Dhesi was found injured and died near 139 Avenue and 32 Street early Sunday morning, where a shooting had been reported. Her family said she had been visiting a friend. Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has not said if the arrested youth has been charged. Police chief Warren Driechel said they were 16 years old while speaking Tuesday to reporters at the 121st Annual Summit and Policing Trade Show in Alberta’s capital city. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, after which EPS said it would release more information. Driechel says Edmonton Police Service is seeing a rise in youth violence and, in response, is boosting its youth strategy. Part of the strategy is a program in which people with gang experience mentor youth who are at risk of becoming involved in gang activity. Edmonton police and Mounties are currently investigating another youth homicide. The remains of a 12-year-old Edmonton boy, Fiasal Hussein, were found north of Edmonton by a member of the public on Aug. 6.
