At least 13 people are sick as part of a gastroenteritis outbreak at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
The outbreak was declared in the southern part of the B2 Medicine Wing.
The first case was reported on April 4 and the last known case was confirmed on April 8. According to a news release from the hospital, the outbreak involves seven patients and six staff.
People are strongly discouraged from visiting while the outbreak is active, but one visitor per patient will be permitted. Visitors will be required to wear appropriate PPE and have no signs or symptoms of illnesses.
Admissions to the unit will continue.
Gastroenteritis symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain.
To help mitigate the spread, dedicated staff are being assigned to the unit and PPE will be worn while caring for patients. Stool samples will be collected from symptomatic patients for virology testing.
The outbreak will be declared over when no new cases have been identified for at least five days after the last case’s symptoms onset.
