Surveillance footage video shows an elderly woman on trial for the death of her husband went to the Brantford casino on the day of his death. The video was presented to the court as the Crown made its case earlier this week, alleging that Elfgard Oughtred, 81, is guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 82-year-old Gordon Oughtred. The Crown said Elfgard spent approximately 30 minutes at Elements Casino Brantford on Icomm Drive on Nov. 24, 2022. That same day, Gordon was found dead in his home. Blunt force trauma has been listed as his cause of death. The Crown alleges Elfgard killed her husband by attacking him with a hammer. They claim she had a gambling addiction that caused stress in their marriage. Previously, Elfgard’s daughter testified that her mother, while in police custody, told her she attacked Gordon with a hammer. On Wednesday, Ontario Provincial Police Detective Allan Stevenson testified about the surveillance footage from Nov. 24. He said the footage showed Elfgard’s orange Jeep Compass travelling from the Oughtreds’ farm to the casino. Elfgard is later seen walking into the casino and using an escalator before sitting down at a slot machine. She left the casino roughly half-an-hour later. On Thursday, Gordon’s son, Warren Oughtred, testified that he had seen his step-mother’s vehicle at the casino six months before Gordon’s death. He told his father, who reportedly confronted Elfgard about her alleged habit. However, Warren did not see that interaction. Warren also said Elfgard’s Jeep was at the casino during the week of Gordon’s death and said he told his father, “If there are a few thousand dollars missing [from your bank statements], you might have a problem.” The defense noted when Gordon died, Warren took over his dad’s portion of the family farm. The trial was briefly paused on Thursday. It is expected to resume on Friday.
