At least 75 students who took part in a “blockade” last week at École polyvalente de Saint-Jérôme, about an hour away from Montreal, have been suspended until next Friday by the school’s administration. Noovo Info confirmed the information with the Centre de services scolaire de la Rivière-du-Nord. “Work is continuing to determine the individual responsibility of each student involved,” the school service centre stated. “The extent of the offences committed will be known later this week.” This comes after a large number of students caused chaos last Friday as they took part in a gathering reportedly inspired by the high school student movement currently occurring in France. According to the school, 2,000 students took part in the protest, and local police had to be called in. The school has a total of 3,400 students. All the same, Mélissa Bossé, a spokesperson with Saint-Jérôme police, told Noovo Info on Monday that there were no reported fights or significant acts of vandalism. However, she said some students did jostle one another, and there were accounts of trash cans being knocked over. A student at the comprehensive high school also told Noovo Info that some people were throwing bins at each other and running through the hallways. The school’s administration says it has put a number of measures in place to respond to future potential “blockades,” including the hiring of security guards.
