Ahead of the swearing-in of his MPs, the leader of the Quebec Liberal Party (QLP), Charles Milliard, unveiled his official opposition leadership team in the National Assembly on Sunday. André Fortin has been appointed parliamentary leader. The MP for Pontiac previously served as the PLQ’s parliamentary leader when Mr Milliard took over as party leader last February. Madwa-Nika Cadet will serve as chief whip. Filomena Rotiroti has been appointed caucus chair, whilst Julie White has been named deputy leader. The PLQ retained its status as the official opposition following the election on 5 October, even doubling its number of MPs from 18 to 40. However, a judicial recount is currently underway in the constituency of Vachon, which was won by the Liberal candidate Affine Lwalalika with a narrow lead of ten votes over the PQ candidate Stephan Fogaing. The Liberal MPs will be sworn in on Monday afternoon at the National Assembly, a few days after their PQ colleagues have been sworn in. The elected representatives of Québec Solidaire will be sworn in on Tuesday, whilst the Conservative MPs will be sworn in on Thursday. The composition of the Parti Québécois’ Cabinet will be announced on Wednesday. This report by The Canadian Press was first published in French on Oct. 18, 2026.
