Police watchdog investigating after man killed during intervention near Quebec City

Quebec’s police watchdog has opened an investigation after a police officer shot and killed a man during an intervention in the province’s Chaudière-Appalaches region on Saturday.

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) said Sunday that Quebec provincial police received a 911 call at 6:18 p.m. about a report of a man with a gun in Saint-Raphaël, a municipality about 65 kilometres east of Quebec City.

Officers with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) responded to the man’s home and attempted to make contact with him, but he allegedly did not comply with their orders.

An officer opened fire on the man after he exited his home with a firearm, the BEI said in a news release. The man suffered at least one gunshot wound and was sent to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The BEI launched its investigation at 10:21 p.m. Saturday. Five BEI investigators have been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Quebec City police service is also assisting with the investigation.
