Quebec correctional officers vote in favour of settlement

Quebec correctional officers have finally voted in favour of the proposed settlement presented to them to renew their collective bargaining agreement.

They voted 78 per cent in favour of this proposed settlement, which was submitted by the conciliator in early June. However, voter turnout was 56 per cent. General membership meetings were held from June 15 to July 6.

There had already been an initial agreement in principle in June 2025, but it was rejected by the members. Negotiations with the Ministry of Domestic Security then resumed.

The union, which is part of the Federation of Public Service Employees—affiliated with the CSN—has 2,900 members. They work in 17 correctional facilities in Quebec.

The previous collective bargaining agreement had expired on March 31, 2023—at the same time as those for union members in the public and parapublic sectors.

The peace officers do not have the right to strike. They had demonstrated and engaged in pressure tactics outside several correctional facilities and courthouses in Quebec on May 20. The Administrative Labour Tribunal intervened at the request of government representatives.

The union argued that the collective bargaining agreement should take into account the particularly difficult conditions under which its members work, including violence, gangs, tensions within correctional facilities, and drone deliveries.
