Quebec provincial police will gradually phase out the use of its 310-4141 and *4141 phone numbers as it transitions to a modernized version of the 911 system.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said the two police phone numbers will begin to be phased out beginning June 1 as they have become obsolete due to advancements in the telecommunications infrastructure.

The phone lines have been in use for non-emergency calls and as an alternative to 911 in certain regions. They will remain available for a few more months after June but will play an automated message directing callers to the appropriate services.

Going forward, residents will need to call the SQ station in their area for non-urgent calls. A list of stations is on the SQ’s website.

Emergencies should still be reported to 911.

Road signs with the *4141 number will also be removed.

“This change aims to ensure more efficient use of telephone lines. We are working with all our partners to minimize the impact and ensure a smooth transition for residents,” the SQ said.

The transition is part of the broader shift to next-generation 911 (NG9-1-1) service across Canada by March 31, 2027. In the future, Canadians will be able to send a video of a collision, use real-time text messaging with first responders, and allow for a more precise location of a 911 caller.

The Government of Quebec invested $45.4 million to support communications centres in the transition.
