Quebec’s election campaign enters its 11th day, with leaders making announcements across the province on transport, agriculture, culture and sports participation. The election is scheduled for Oct. 5. Key details: Follow along for the latest updates: Conservatives want to offer a $100 rebate to encourage sports participation Conservative Leader Éric Duhaime promised on Sunday a $100 annual rebate for signing up for a sports activity. Called “Passe Sport,” this discount will be available to every Quebecer with a household income of less than $100,000. Nearly 1.3 million people could benefit from it, according to the party’s estimates. “Being active should never be a luxury,” said Duhaim. “The Passe Sport will directly reduce the cost of physical activities while improving the physical and mental health of Quebecers.” This discount can be used to pay for sports registration, a gym membership, or an activity offered by a municipality. “By focusing on prevention, we will also reduce the strain on our health-care system,” said Duhaime. The Quebec Conservative Party also plans to focus on sports in schools by increasing the number of physical education periods in elementary and high school and reinstating a fourth physical education course in CEGEP. Inspired by the physical education model in Slovenia, the Conservatives also want to introduce annual, standardized physical fitness tests in schools to measure students’ progress. - The Canadian Press Liberals pledge to complete widening of Highway 50 Even though Quebec’s public finances are in the red, Liberal leader Charles Milliard pledges that, if his party takes power, it will complete the widening of Highway 50 within 10 years. “While the CAQ is trying to make people forget its inaction and the Parti Québécois wants to plunge Quebec into another referendum, our team is focused on the real priorities of Quebecers: their safety, their quality of life, and the development of their regions,” he said. The Liberals promise to begin design work for the entire Highway 50 as soon as they take office and to complete the four-lane widening of the 17-kilometre Lachute–Mirabel section during their first term. The widening of Highway 50—renamed the Guy Lafleur Highway—has been promised time and time again by previous governments. In 2022, the CAQ committed to widening Highway 50 by 2032. The project was put on hold due to a lack of funding. “The Guy-Lafleur Highway connects Gatineau to Mirabel over approximately 158 kilometres. However, a significant portion of its route remains as side-by-side lanes without a median, which notably increases the risk of head-on collisions,” the party said in its press release. “Between January 2019 and November 2024, the Sûreté du Québec recorded more than 3,800 collisions on this stretch, including 47 that resulted in serious injuries and 28 fatalities.
