One person was taken to hospital Tuesday morning in North Bay when a fire broke out in a residence on Nancy Drive in the north end of the city. Fire information officer Chris Nichol said crews arrived around 7 a.m. “An accidental fire happened inside a bedroom -- the person was asleep at the time,” Nichol said. “Then when he awoke, he attempted to extinguish the fire … The fire wasn’t extinguished and so they called 911. The fire crews showed up shortly after and were able to get the fire out pretty quickly.” A burning candle appears to be the source of the fire, he added. “As of right now, there was one person (who) was brought to the hospital and I believe he’s being assessed by the hospital right now,” Nichol said. He stressed the importance of residents only placing candles on safe surfaces -- and blowing them out before you fall asleep. “With the tenants’ actions and then with the firefighters being quickly dispatched, we were able to get here and keep the fire just to the bedroom,” Nichol said. “There’s no damage estimate at this time (but) charges are pending … for missing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.” Later on Tuesday, fire officials said five residents were able to evacuate. The homeowner has been charged with five offences totalling $1,675 under the Ontario Fire Code,
