Impaired, dangerous driving charges laid after northern Ont. crash

A 57-year-old man from Espanola is facing multiple charges – including impaired driving – following a two-vehicle crash in late September.

The incident occurred on Annette Street in the Town of Espanola at about 3 p.m. on Sept. 29.

Ontario Provincial Police received a report of the collision and officers attended the scene and confirmed there were no injuries.

“A breath test was completed with one of the drivers using an approved screening device,” OPP said in a news release Thursday.

As a result of the investigation, the local man was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle and failing to remain at the scene of a collision along with two impaired driving offences – including having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80.

In addition to the charges, under provincial law, the driver also received a 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 17.

‘Make the call’

OPP officials reiterated the dangers of impaired driving, saying “no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe while driving” and encouraged the public to report suspected impaired drivers.

“If you suspect an impaired driver on our roads, waterways or trails, don’t hesitate to ‘make the call’ and dial 911,” said police.

“Your phone call could save someone’s life.”
