A 31-year-old in Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with stunt driving following an incident late last month on McNabb Street. Police spotted the vehicle around 7:25 a.m. on June 26. “The vehicle was locked on radar driving 105 km/h in a 50 km/h zone,” police said in a news release July 8. The driver was charged with stunt driving and given an automatic 30-day licence suspension. The vehicle was towed at the driver’s expense and will be impounded for two weeks. In Ontario, penalties for stunt driving include a fine between $2,000 and $10,000. Other sanctions could include a driver’s licence suspension up to three years and jail time up to six months. A conviction also brings demerit points to the driver’s licence, the likelihood of higher insurance premiums and they must attend a driver improvement course or their licence will be cancelled. “Driving is a privilege and violating the law can result in the loss of that privilege,” police said.
