Sault woman killed in motorcycle crash near Thunder Bay

A Sault Ste. Marie woman is dead after a crash involving multiple motorcycles on Highway 11-17 near Highway 527 on Saturday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police said officers and emergency medical services responded to the scene at approximately 7:30 a.m. on July 11, following reports of the crash.

“As a result of the incident, a 58-year-old female from Sault Ste. Marie was pronounced deceased at the scene,” OPP said in a news release.

Highway closed for hours

The collision prompted a full closure of Highway 11-17 in both directions between Highway 527 and MacGregor Road for much of the day.

As of shortly after 4 p.m., OPP advised that eastbound lanes had reopened to traffic in both directions, though westbound lanes remained closed.

The highway was fully reopened by approximately 6 p.m., according to an OPP social media post.

Investigation continuing

“The investigation by Thunder Bay OPP is continuing,” said police.

An OPP collision reconstructionist and a technical collision investigator are assisting with the investigation.

No further details about the circumstances of the crash, the exact number of vehicles involves have been released by police. OPP have not stated if there were any other injuries as a result of the incident or is charges are being considered.

“OPP would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation during the highway closure while they conducted their investigation,” said police in an updated news release Saturday evening.
