Ontario Provincial Police say an 81-year-old driver from Sault Ste. Marie died in a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle during the noon hour Monday on Highway 17 at Batchawana Bay. The OPP said the crash occurred north of the city, police said in a news release Oct. 19. “Sault Ste. Marie OPP responded to a serious two-vehicle collision on Highway 17, near Pancake Bay Provincial Park,” police said. The highway was closed between Mills Drive in Wawa and Highway 563 for several hours to allow investigators to examine the crash site. Highway 17 fully reopened at about 10:15 p.m., OPP said on social media. Provincial police have not released any details on the cause of the crash, whether there were any other injuries or if any charges are being considered.
