Sudbury man on probation charged with home invasion, impaired driving

A 34-year-old Sudbury man has been charged after police were called to reports of a home invasion April 29 in the community of Chelmsford.

Police responded to a residence on Charette Avenue around 4:40 p.m.

“Information provided was that an individual attended the residence, forced entry to the home and assaulted a resident inside,” police said in a news release April 30.

“The individual then fled in a vehicle prior to police arrival. While responding to the incident, officers were provided with a description of the vehicle and the direction of travel.”

A short time later, police located the vehicle on MR35 and conducted a traffic stop.

“When officers approached the vehicle and asked the driver for identification, the driver refused and sped off in the vehicle at a high rate of speed,” police said.

“Officers did not pursue the vehicle due to concerns about public safety and the erratic behaviour of the driver.”

However, police said the suspect was involved in a single-vehicle collision a short time later near Marier Street.

“Upon locating the driver, the individual displayed signs of impairment,” police said.

“The individual was placed under arrest after a brief struggle with officers. The individual was transported to headquarters, where a breath technician obtained two breath samples well over the legal limit.”

The man has been charged with break and enter, aggravated assault, weapons offences, fleeing police, impaired driving, dangerous driving, violating probation and violating a release order.

He was held in custody overnight and was scheduled to be in bail court April 30.
