Construction crews have begun work on a multi-phase upgrade at the Timmins Victor M. Power Airport, a project city officials say will expand passenger facilities and improve accessibility at the northeastern Ontario hub. The $3.3-million investment, funded by the City of Timmins, covers an expansion of the departure lounge, a renovation of the security screening area and an update to the terminal’s exterior facade. The work represents the first major phase of improvements recommended under the Airport Master Plan. Operations maintained during construction The airport remains fully open throughout the construction, though travellers will encounter temporary changes to terminal access and departure procedures. “While the airport remains fully operational, travellers can expect temporary changes to terminal access and departures as work progresses,” the city said in a news release. Construction is being staged in phases to limit disruptions. A new temporary interior wall has been installed inside the existing departure lounge to accommodate the expansion and safety fencing now surrounds the exterior work area. During this phase, all passengers will depart from one gate. According to the city, “airport staff and signage providing direction” are in place to guide travellers. Curbside and parking adjustments Drivers picking up or dropping off passengers will notice changes to curbside access. Sections of the curbside parking lane will be temporarily closed for exterior work, and taxi and shuttle pick-up and drop-off locations may shift as construction progresses. Signage to direct vehicles will mark the changing routes, the city indicated. To help maintain available space at the terminal entrance, the city is encouraging visitors to use parking spots across from the entrance on the left side. Long-term growth strategy The city called the airport a critical transportation link for northeastern Ontario, and its Master Plan projects steady passenger growth of roughly 1.1 per cent annually over the coming years. “The plan’s recommended investments help ensure the airport can continue to support regional connectivity, business development and local tourism,” the city said. Further updates are expected as the phased work continues.
