Youth cyclist hurt in Sudbury collision, no charges

Police in Greater Sudbury, Ont., say a youth on a bicycle sustained non-life-threatening injuries after colliding with a vehicle on Anderson Drive in Lively on Thursday afternoon.

In an email to CTV News, Greater Sudbury Police Service spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn confirmed that emergency crews were called to the scene just before 3:15 p.m. on June 4.

The collision occurred in the vicinity of St. James Catholic Elementary School.

Police investigation

Dunn said investigators determined the cyclist exited a trail and was unable to stop before hitting the vehicle.

“The youth sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by paramedics,” said the police spokesperson.

“No charges will be laid,” added Dunn.

School response

The incident happened during dismissal and school bus pick-up time at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s St. James Catholic Elementary School.

The school, in a letter to local families Thursday evening, said a bus driver transporting students from the school witnessed the collision and immediately contacted emergency services.

“Out of respect for emergency response procedures and to ensure student safety, our buses were temporarily relocated further up the street to allow space for emergency vehicles,” wrote principal Jody O’Daiskey.

The school said that bus loading was redirected and all buses safely departed through the Tom Davies Arena parking lot.

Support for students

School staff were present to support students at the time and ensured all children were safely supervised and calmly boarded their buses.

“We recognize that events such as this can be upsetting or concerning for students,” O’Daiskey wrote, noting the injured student attends a different school board.

On Monday, staff from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board mental health team will be available to any student who may need support.

“At this time, our thoughts are with the student involved in the incident and their family,” O’Daiskey wrote.

“We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”
