An 11-year-old and a nine-year-old took their parents’ vehicle for an early morning drive in the Ottawa Valley without their knowledge on Thanksgiving Monday, according to police. Ontario Provincial Police say an officer was on foot patrol in Pembroke’s west end at approximately 2:50 a.m. Monday when they heard a vehicle doing burnouts nearby. “The information was broadcast to officers in the area, and the vehicle was located on Jean Avenue,” the OPP said. “When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it accelerated away. Officers did not pursue the vehicle.” Police say shortly after, officers found that the vehicle had left the road and crashed into a cornfield at the intersection of Jean Avenue and TV Tower Road. There was no one in the vehicle when officers arrived on the scene. Police say the two youths were located by the OPP Canine Unit about an hour later. The youths were turned over to their parents by police. “It was determined that the vehicle had been taken from a parent without their knowledge or consent,” the OPP said. “The parents and youths were made aware that charges would not be pursued due to the youths being below the age of criminal responsibility.” No serious injuries were reported to the two children.
