The University of Regina Rams lost to the University of Calgary Dinos after missing a last-second field goal on Saturday. Regina lost 14-13 in a low-scoring affair that went down to the wire, with most of the team’s points coming from kicker Ty Gorniak. He opened the game with three field goals, hitting kicks from 32, 39 and 17 yards away to give Regina a 9-0 lead in the second quarter. However, Calgary was able to answer with 11 points of its own, all scored in the final six minutes of the second quarter. Calgary kicker Boaz Comeau hit a 49-yarder and then added a single on a missed 45-yard attempt, making the score 9-4 for Regina. With a minute remaining in the first half, quarterback David Jordan found receiver Matt Sibley for 11- and 40-yard gains before running back Gavin Weiss finished off the 65-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown. This was the only touchdown scored by either team in the game and made the score 11-9. Calgary’s defence intercepted Regina quarterback Owen Sieben twice in the third quarter, managing to convert the second pick into another Comeau field goal — giving the Dinos a 14-9 lead. Regina fought back and managed to eat into the lead with another Gorniak field goal early in the fourth quarter. It was his fourth of the day. The field goal, along with a single from a Gorniak punt, brought the deficit down to just one point at 14-13 for Calgary. Rams defensive back Tyleon Ocaya stripped the ball from Calgary receiver Trey Loupelle, which was then picked up by Regina’s Carson Sombach. With a minute and 46 seconds to go, Regina drove into field goal range thanks to consecutive runs from running back Carter Ashman. However, Gorniak’s 22-yard attempt struck the right upright as time expired. Regina’s rushing attack carried its offence Saturday, running for 213 yards in total. Ashman led the way with 110 yards on 18 carries, followed by Marshall Erichsen (63 yards on 11 carries) and Christian Katende (40 yards on seven carries). Rams linebackers Liam LaBelle and Owen Zimmer both had 6.5 tackles to lead the team on the day. Zimmer also had the game’s only sack which resulted in a nine-yard loss for Calgary early in the fourth. At 2-3, the Rams are currently in fifth place in the Canada West conference. Calgary has the same record but owns the tiebreaker between the two teams, placing it at fourth. Following a conference-wide bye week, Regina will look to redeem themselves against the Alberta Golden Bears on Thursday, Oct. 15, at Leibel Field.
