The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) says it is in the process of adding security to more facilities in rural communities. The organization announced the expansion Friday, saying trials held in 2025 saw contracted protective services placed in Prince Albert, North Battleford and Lloydminster. The success of these trials has led to the expansion of the approach to five more communities. The new centres include La Loche, Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Nipawin and Melfort. The new personnel focused on “improving responsiveness to violence including prevention, de-escalation, and providing a physical response when needed in support of care teams.” According to the SHA, rollout to Kamsack, Weyburn and Shellbrook has been delayed to due to collective bargaining requirements with CUPE. The Corps of Commissionaires were chosen as the third-party provider. Officers will begin working in the newly identified centres through August. The health authority added that an external review of protective service protocols announced in the spring is continuing, calling the process an “important step” to strengthening safety across the health system.
