Southern Saskatchewan slated for winter storm conditions

Environment Canada warns of freezing rain and snow across the province, urging caution on roads and sidewalks. Jacob Carr reports.

Much of southern Saskatchewan is now under a winter storm watch, as an Alberta Clipper continues to creep towards the province.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), a low-pressure system from Alberta will travel through Saskatchewan beginning Tuesday morning and ending early Wednesday morning (Dec. 9-10).

The federal weather service forecasts a large swath of freezing rain extending from the Alberta border west of Kindersley, southeast through Moose Jaw and to the U.S. border southeast of Estevan.

Regina, Yorkton, Weyburn and Maple Creek are just some centres under the storm advisory.

“When you’re driving through tomorrow morning, you’re going to want to budget extra time because it is going to be probably a little slick on the roads, especially the highways,” said ECCC scientist Christy Climenhaga. “That highway between Saskatoon and Regina you could see some difficulties there.”

Strong winds are also forecasted to develop Tuesday evening.

As the system crosses the province, heavy snowfall is likely to occur in southeastern Saskatchewan, followed by high winds and blowing snow.

So, ECCC reminds those who are heading outside to dress appropriately for the cold weather and carry emergency kits in their vehicles.

“When you’re looking at traveling, having something in your vehicle if you do, hopefully not, but if you do have some car trouble that’s something to keep in mind for this time of the year,” Climenhaga added.

“Especially when we do have systems coming through and bringing with it some precipitation, some slippery conditions, potentially some lower visibility at times.”
