RCMP share photo of potential suspect in Battlefords area grandparent scams

Battlefords Mounties believe they’ve identified a man who might know about a series of grandparent scams they’ve been investigating.

They described him as a man with dark hair and as wearing dark clothes, shoes and sunglasses on April 20.

In April, Battlefords RCMP said it received reports of numerous scams, including one of a victim who paid cash to a scammer after being asked to use a specific name and “passcode.”

Others include scammers asking victims to take cash to a crypto ATM and use a provided barcode to send the money to a crypto wallet.

According to an RCMP news release, scammers have also been using the names of legitimate lawyers in their exchanges with victims.

RCMP’s White Butte Detachment had also received two separate reports in April about residents in the area getting targeted by grandparent scams. In both cases, the scammer tried to meet up with the victims in-person, according to police.

Police are asking those with information to contact Battlefords RCMP or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.
