Truck crashes into bridge in Liberty Village, disrupting King streetcar service for hours

Streetcars have stopped running on a large section of King St. after a truck struck a bridge, and officials say the service suspension could last all day.

Streetcar service on a large section of King Street has been restored after a truck struck a bridge on Wednesday morning and caused a lengthy disruption.

Toronto police said the crash occurred at 8:20 a.m. near King Street West and Atlantic Avenue in the city’s west end.

No structural damage has been reported to the bridge, but streetcar lines were hit.

Susan Nguyen, a spokesperson for the TTC, told CP24 that the damage to the overhead streetcar power lines was “extensive” and repairs could extend into Thursday morning.

Officials initially said that service was suspended in both directions, but westbound streetcars were seen running shortly before 11:30 a.m.

Shuttle buses were running between Shaw Street and Roncesvalles Avenue to supplement service.

Eastbound streetcars resumed service shortly before 4 p.m. following the completion of repairs.

The cause of the crash is unclear, but police told CP24 that the truck driver remained at the scene. The vehicle has since been removed.
