An Oshawa man was shocked to find out he has been paying almost $90 a month for years for a HEPA air filtration system that was never installed in his home. “They are taking money out of my account for something I don’t have. I’m paying for something I don’t have,” Joseph Kwiatkowski told CTV News. Kwiatkowski said four years ago he saw an ad on social media for a furnace and decided to have the company over to listen to their pitch. “I think it was some kind of promotion and I did need a furnace so they came and looked at it (his old furnace), and I said OK we will replace the furnace,” he said. Kwiatkowski said at the time he bought his new furnace he was told he should also purchase a HEPA filter air cleaning system, so he agreed to a 10-year contract to pay for both. The contract he signed in 2022 shows he was paying $110 a month for the furnace and $70 for the HEPA filter but prices have gone up and the current HEPA filter charge is now $87 per month. Kwiatkowski said he never really noticed a difference in air quality in his home and recently he needed to replace his air conditioner. He said he was shocked when the installers told him there was no HEPA filter system unit installed in his home. The HEPA filter he’d been paying for, for almost four years had never been installed. “They told me there is no HEPA filter with your system. There is nothing there at all and I was shocked,” said Kwiatkowski. Over the past four years, the charges for the HEPA filter that was never installed totalled $3,700. “I feel very disappointed and I would like my money back,” said Kwiatkowski. Kwiatkowski signed the contract with Sandpiper Energy Solutions. When CTV News reached out to the company a spokesperson indicated that “this matter has been resolved, and our client has been informed.” Sandpiper said it immediately cancelled the HEPA filter contract and gave Kwiatkowski a refund of $3,700, which was great news for him. “I’ve very glad that this has been dealt with. My wife and I are very pleased to get this money back,” said Kwiatkowski.
