13-year-old seriously injured in e-scooter crash in Metro Vancouver

A 13-year-old e-scooter rider was seriously injured after a crash in Metro Vancouver Monday, according to authorities, who are urging people to follow the rules around micromobility devices.

Officers were called to the scene near 232 Street and 124 Avenue in Maple Ridge around 5 p.m., the local RCMP detachment said in a statement.

“Officers arrived on scene and located a young person laying on the sidewalk suffering from serious injuries,” Mounties said.

“Officers provided initial first aid to the youth before alerting emergency health services. The 13-year-old victim was transported to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.”

Police said their investigation revealed the driver was pulling out of a parking spot when their vehicle was “struck” by the e-scooter.

“No criminality is suspected, however, the investigation is still ongoing. Of note, the youth was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision,” according to the statement.

E-scooters are only allowed on public streets in municipalities that are part of a provincial pilot program.

Maple Ridge is not one of them.

In addition, people younger than 16 are not allowed to ride e-scooters and their parents or guardians are prohibited from allowing younger children to ride them.

The incident in Maple Ridge comes on the heels of a warning from health officials about a spike in e-scooter-related injuries.

There were 81 patients treated in the B.C. Children’s Hospital emergency department between April 2025 and March 2026—more than twice as many as the previous year.

Most of the hospital’s emergency visits involved children between the ages of 13 and 15.

Of the cases treated at B.C. Children’s Hospital, 35 per cent involved bone fractures, 26 per cent involved bruises and 17 per cent involved concussions.
