Pedestrian struck by impaired driver has died, Abbotsford police say

A pedestrian who was struck by an allegedly impaired driver in Abbotsford Friday afternoon has succumbed to his injuries, police confirmed.

The man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by an SUV at the intersection of Emerson Street and Simon Avenue just after 3:30 p.m., according to police, who say he died later that night.

The driver of the SUV was arrested at the scene and police say alcohol was a factor in the crash.

On Saturday, Abbotsford Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker told CTV News she was released from custody pending further investigation, but he expects charges to be recommended eventually.

Video from the scene shows a blue Toyota Tacoma with front-end damage, which Walker confirmed was not the vehicle involved in the pedestrian crash.

He said the pickup truck “barreled through” the scene and hit an ambulance.
