Snowmobiler who went missing near B.C.-Yukon border found dead

A snowmobiler who went missing last week near the B.C.-Yukon border has been found dead, authorities confirmed Monday.

The individual was among three snowmobilers headed up Haines Pass to retrieve a “broken-down snowmachine” on Friday, the B.C. RCMP said in a news release.

At some point, one of the snowmobilers became separated from the group.

Early search efforts were hampered by “treacherous winter conditions and zero visibility,” the RCMP said, but a helicopter was able to access the area Sunday morning during a break in the weather.

The body of the missing snowmobiler was found that afternoon roughly four kilometres from his last known location, according to authorities.

The individual’s name has not been released. The RCMP said the death is being investigated by the B.C. Coroners Service.
