Suspect arrested in Langley stabbing that drew ERT response, RCMP say

Police are investigating two stabbings in as many days in Langley, but say the incidents are not related to one another.

A 36-year-old Langley man has been arrested in connection to the targeted stabbing that drew a heavily armed police presence to the township’s Willoughby neighbourhood Thursday afternoon.

Langley RCMP announced the arrest in a statement Friday afternoon, describing it as the result of “strong collaboration” between the detachment’s general investigation and serious crimes units.

“We would like to acknowledge the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team for their assistance,” said Supt. Harm Dosange, officer in charge of the Langley detachment, in the release.

“This remains a targeted incident, and there is no ongoing risk to the general public.”

Officers were called to 199 Street near 64 Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. for “a report of a disturbance,” and arrived to find the 46-year-old victim suffering from “a serious stab wound,” police said Thursday.

At the time, they described the deployment of the ERT as something that was done “out of an abundance of caution.”

The suspect remains in custody, though charges have not yet been laid, Langley RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Zynal Sharoom said in an email to CTV News Friday.

Sharoom added that the suspect was arrested in Surrey, though he did not specify where in that city the arrest took place.

Images from the stabbing scene showed the heavily armed ERT patrolling the townhouse complex where the incident occurred, some of which was behind police tape.

Residents told CTV News they were kept out of their homes for hours as the investigation progressed.

“Of course, I feel anxious and nervous,” said resident Divina Sagadraca. “This is the first time that it’s happened in this complex.”
