Jerry St. Onge visibly loves the Windsor Spitfires. The front of his place is adorned with signs and updates, which have become a rallying point for fans riding the team’s playoff run. During our interview, a car honk. “Go Spits. Go Spits.” St. Onge yelled to the passing vehicle. “Everybody does that around here too. I think it’s amazing how you can tell who the fans are and who’s not fans.” His thought was cut off by another horn honker, which brought another smile to his face. St. Onge has all kinds of signs that he uses to decorate his place on Giles Boulevard near Howard Avenue. He also showed CTV News his LED driven Spitfires flag he passionately waves at home games. “I don’t know if I’m a superfan, but I am one of the fans.” St. Onge said. After finishing only two points apart in the standings, St. Onge was expecting the Spits to win a close series, not a four-game sweep, “We never know how the cookie crumbles until it crumbles. Go Spits.” Steve Bell, the radio voice of the Spitfires on AM800, is happy the team swept, “Anytime you can win a series in four, get a little time to rest up, even for the old broadcaster and get ready for the next round that’s fine.” Bell, who explained Windsor was simply the better team in every game of the Western Conference semi-finals, added “It’s a team game and this is a good team. They seem to really get along well together. There’s no real clicks between younger players and older players and I think sky’s the limit. It really is this year.” The Soo Greyhounds beat Kitchener 4-2 Thursday at home to extend their semi-final series. They now trail the Rangers 3-1 in the best-of-seven series with game five slated for Friday night. The winner advances to face the Spitfires in the conference final. “I really do expect Windsor-Kitchener and there’s no love lost between the two teams and I expect a tremendous Western Conference final,” said Bell. As for St. Onge, he’s got ideas on how to keep the front of his home fresh for as long as the playoff run goes, “I’m pumped. I can’t wait for the next game against the Rangers. This is going to be great. Hopefully we win but Go Spits Go!”
