Vancouver police warn of spike in ‘costly’ catalytic converter thefts

Police in Vancouver are investigating a spike in catalytic converter thefts after receiving dozens of reports in recent weeks.

The Vancouver Police Department is urging east side residents to be vigilant after it says 41 such thefts were reported within city limits west of Ontario Street and south of First Avenue.

Police say 23 thefts were reported in June, with another 18 reported so far this month.

“We’re typically seeing these incidents happening between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. under cover of darkness,” Sgt. Adam Donaldson said in a statement Friday.

“Thieves use angle grinders or portable saws and can be finished in a minute or so.”

Catalytic converters regulate emissions through a vehicle’s exhaust system and contain precious metals like platinum, palladium and rhodium, which can be sold to scrap metal dealers.

Investigators say SUVs are particularly vulnerable because their higher ground clearance provides easier access to the underside of the vehicle.

According to Vancouver police, the most frequently targeted models include the Toyota Highlander, Toyota 4Runner, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Tucson and Lexus RX series.

“The result for the victims of these thefts is a costly insurance deductible, as well as the frustrating inconvenience of having to get their vehicles repaired,” Donaldson added.

Police recommend parking overnight in a garage or well-lit area and installing a catalytic converter shield or motion-sensing alarm. Drivers can also reduce the risk of theft by parking close to a wall or other obstruction, making it more difficult for thieves to access the catalytic converter.

Anyone who witnesses a catalytic converter theft is asked to call 911 immediately, while anyone with information about the recent rash of thefts is asked to contact the Vancouver Police Department.
