First cruise ship in six years set to return to Port Alberni B.C.

After six years without a cruise ship at its waterfront, Port Alberni is preparing to welcome one of the world’s most unusual passenger vessels, a floating residential community whose residents help decide where it travels each year.

The World is scheduled to arrive Saturday morning and stay in port until late Sunday, becoming the first cruise ship to visit the city since 2019.

The ship is home to 165 privately owned residences, ranging from studio suites to multi-bedroom apartments. Owners can live aboard full-time or travel on and off the vessel as it moves between destinations around the globe.

Residents also play a direct role in shaping the ship’s global itinerary, voting on destinations and routes each year. The vessel typically remains in port longer than many traditional cruise ships, allowing more time for exploration in each stop.

On board, residents have access to amenities more commonly associated with luxury resorts, including multiple restaurants, a spa and a full-sized tennis court.

For local officials, the arrival represents both a rare maritime sight and an opportunity to showcase the community to an industry that is increasingly looking toward smaller, less traditional ports of call.

Port Alberni has been working to raise its profile within the cruise sector in recent years as it explores opportunities to diversify waterfront activity and tourism.

Carmela Ferro, manager of marketing communications and public relations for the Port Alberni Port Authority, said she attended Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami earlier this year, one of the industry’s largest annual gatherings.

“It was a great chance to connect with some lines and let them know where we are, who we are and what we have to offer,” Ferro said.

She said interest from cruise operators has been increasing as the city highlights its outdoor recreation, waterfront attractions and access to Vancouver Island’s west coast.

While no additional cruise ship visits have been confirmed for this year, officials say there is potential for growth if interest continues to build.

“The economic benefit to Port Alberni could be huge if we get some more cruise ships up the inlet,” Ferro said.

“To have passengers embark into our beautiful region and come spend their money on food and great excursions and events and all the wonderful shops, it’s a big deal.”

One of Port Alberni’s key draws is the journey itself.

Before reaching the city’s harbour, vessels travel nearly 40 kilometres through the Alberni Inlet, passing steep forested shorelines and dramatic coastal scenery rarely seen by cruise passengers.

“It’s breathtaking,” Ferro said. “It’s quite spectacular.”

The Port Alberni Port Authority is also exploring potential infrastructure upgrades that could support future vessel visits if demand continues to grow.

Ferro said any long-term expansion of cruise tourism would depend on collaboration with local businesses, tourism operators and First Nations partners.

“The work is happening and we’re really excited, and we’ll share more when we can,” she said.

Residents hoping to view the ship are encouraged to gather at public vantage points such as the Alberni Lighthouse Marina and Centennial Pier. Access to terminal areas will be restricted during the vessel’s stay.

As The World makes its way up the Alberni Inlet this weekend, the visit will mark more than the return of cruise tourism to Port Alberni. It will also offer a glimpse of how the community is positioning itself for future opportunities on the West Coast cruise map.
