A driver in Thompson dealt with an unpleasant surprise over the weekend after they drove into a massive sinkhole on Sunday.

According to a social media post from the Thompson Professional Firefighters Association, members responded to a report of a vehicle submerged in a sinkhole on Elm Street. Photos in the post show a vehicle almost fully submerged in a gaping sinkhole surrounded by water.

The association said the driver was able to escape without injuries.

The City of Thompson said a water main break on the street late Thursday caused the road to deteriorate, but they did not have staff available to deal with it fully because of the long weekend.

Signs and barricades were set up near the break due to uncertain structural integrity.

The City of Thompson said the sinkhole was repaired Tuesday.
