Funnel cloud sightings reported in southwestern Manitoba: Environment Canada

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is reporting funnel cloud sightings in southwestern Manitoba as the rainy weather is set to continue across the province.

As of Monday morning, the weather agency has yet to confirm any tornado touchdowns from Sunday’s stormy weather, although funnel cloud sightings were reported in the southwest.

So far, Souris has seen the highest rainfall total with 59.3 millimetres (mm), though Brandon and Virden are also expected to record heavy precipitation.

Meanwhile, the weather agency has issued a yellow thunderstorm watch for several southern Manitoba communities, including Winnipeg, Brandon, Gimli, and Portage la Prairie.

According to the warning, a cold front moving through the province may produce severe thunderstorms that could bring 50 to 100 mm of rain, 100 km/h wind gusts and 2.5- centimetre hail.

ECCC adds the storm may cause outages, infrastructure damage and destruction to roofs, fences and soft shelters.
