Severe storm causing outages, highway closures, damage

Heavy rain touched down in Brandon on Manitoba, with parts of the city receiving over 100 millimetres of rain.

A major storm in Manitoba on Monday is causing widespread power outages, property damage and highway closures in the province.

Images around Winnipeg show a garage in the city’s Whyte Ridge neighbourhood partially collapsed and a tree uprooted as a major thunderstorm passed over Winnipeg overnight.

In a Tuesday morning social media post, Manitoba Hydro said storm-related outages are impacting more than 4,600 customers in southern Manitoba. This is down from the 14,200 customers who were initially without power.

The Crown corporation said its staff is prioritizing the remaining work and appreciates everyone’s patience.

Along with outages, the severe storm also forced the closure of several Manitoba highways due to flooding. The Manitoba Emergency Management Organization issued a flash flood alert for western parts of the province due to rapid water level rise in low-lying areas.

As of Tuesday at 8:40 a.m., the following closures are in place in the Rosser, Roblin and Swan River areas:

• Highway 10 from Road 148N to Road 149N.
• Highway 10 from Highway 488 to Minitonas.
• Highway 10 from 10 kilometres east of Swan River.
• Highway 10 from Pine River to Cowan.
• Highway 83 at Shell River (between Roblin and Highway 366).
• Highway 221 from the North Perimeter to Highway 248.
• Highway 366 south of Highway 10 for 1.6 kilometres north of Highway 485.
• Highway 471 from Road 91W to Road 93W.
• Highway 484 from Highway 363 to Road 160N.
• Highway 485 from two kilometres west of Highway 366.
• Highway 486 near Highway 485.
• Highway 583 from Highway 5 to Highway 592.
• Highway 584 from Road 166W to Road 165W.
• Highway 584 from Road 161N to Road 160N.
• Highway 584 from Road 163W to Road 160W.
• Highway 593 from Highway 484 to Highway 83.

For access from Dauphin to Swan River, there is a detour from Highway 268 through Birch River and south on Highway 10 to Swan River.
