Heat warnings issued across the Maritimes

Yellow heat warnings are in effect for parts of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

Environment Canada forecasts a period of hot and humid weather from Thursday to Saturday with cooler conditions along parts of the Atlantic coast.

Nova Scotia

Thursday is expected to see a maximum temperature of 29 to 32 C in parts of Nova Scotia, with the humidex making it feel closer to 36 to 39 C.

Temperatures overnight are forecasted at 17 to 20 C.

Environment Canada expects a high of 29 to 33 C on Friday with the humidex feeling closer to 37 to 40 C.

Then Saturday is expected to see highs of 28 to 31 C, or 35 to 38 C on account of the humidex.

New Brunswick

The heat is expected to reach nearly 32 degrees in parts of New Brunswick Thursday, feeling closer to 38 to 42 C with the humidex.

Overnight temperatures will be closer to the 20 to 22 C range, according to Environment Canada.

On Friday, the maximum temperature is forecast at 30 to 33 C, closer to 36 to 40 C with the humidex.

P.E.I.

Islanders can expect 28 C on Friday, with the humidex making it feel more like 36 C with temperatures set to cool to 18 C overnight.

Friday will bring a high of 29 C, feeling closer to 36 C with the humidex.

“Take action to protect yourself and others – extreme heat can affect everyone’s health,” reads the alert. “Check on older adults, those living alone and other at-risk people in-person or on the phone multiple times a day.”

The weather agency also advises residents to monitor for signs of heat exhaustion - which include headache, nausea and dizziness – and to call 911 in cases of heat stroke.

“Limit direct exposure to the sun and heat. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat,” reads the advisory.

Trying to stay cool

Khyla McCarty, a construction worker, says they try to stay hydrated during their work outside in the hot weather.

“I’ve had better days, but it’s going okay,” McCarty said. “I’ll have to get lots of water in us. Even just being out here for a few minutes, it’s pretty hard on us.”

Melanie Langille, president and CEO of NB Lung, says the humid air can make it harder to breathe for everyone, especially those with lung conditions.

“We tend to feel the impacts of these heat waves a little bit more intensely than the general population,” Langille said. “It’s super important for those with lung conditions to pay attention to the Air Quality Health Index.

“If you don’t get a break from the heat, that puts a lot of stress on your body. If you’re already living with a chronic condition, your body is already dealing with a lot of stress so it’s stress on top of stress.

“You can’t understate the importance of drinking a lot of water when it’s really hot like this. It really helps our bodies to kind of move through the irritants that are in the body.”
