Rooftop fire at Timmins Square Canada Day

Firefighters in Timmins were busy Canada Day after a fire broke out on the roof of the Timmins Square shopping centre.

Firefighters from three units in the city of Timmins battled heavy black smoke atop Timmins Square July 1.

With well above average heat and humidity, 24 crew members responded to the fire.

“Upon arrival, firefighters located a fire between two rooftop HVAC units. Crews quickly deployed ground ladders from the ladders from the north parking lot, accessed the roof, and extinguished the visible flames before the fire could spread further,” the city said in a news release July 2.

“Firefighters remained on scene for several hours to ensure there were no remaining hot spots or fire extension throughout the roof.”

No one was in the mall at the time, but several stores, including the food court, received smoke and water damage. the city said.

It’s the fourth structure fire Timmins firefighters have responded to in the past week.
