Significant rainfall is expected in the Maritimes later this week and into the Labour Day long weekend due to a slow-moving weather system. Nova Scotia Special weather statements have been issued across Nova Scotia. Environment Canada says the wet weather is expected from Thursday night until Saturday night for western and central areas. “Tropical moisture will contribute to sustained, heavy downpours. Rainfall rates of 10 to 20 mm per hour may occur over some locations,” the statement reads. “Thunderstorms may develop over some areas, producing locally heavier rainfall.” Meanwhile, in eastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, the rainfall is expected from Friday midday until Monday morning. New Brunswick Special weather statements are also in place for southern and northeastern New Brunswick. The rain in that province is expected from Thursday night until Friday afternoon and possibly into Saturday afternoon for some regions. “There is some uncertainty as to where the highest rainfall amounts will occur, but the potential exists for significant totals over some locations,” Environment Canada says. CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says the slow-moving nature of the system also makes it difficult to pinpoint when it will completely clear the region. Prince Edward Island All of P.E.I. is now under special weather statements, warning of similar conditions.
